Strategy (MSTR) swung to an $8.6 billion net loss in Q2 on bitcoin's fair-value markdown, yet still grew its stash 11% to 846,000 BTC — and unveiled a $1 billion buyback authorization to push its flagship digital credit product, STRC, back toward par.

  • Q2 net loss of $8.6 billion, or $24.45 per share, driven entirely by a non-cash fair-value adjustment on bitcoin at quarter-end[BigGo Finance]
  • Bitcoin holdings rose 11% quarter-over-quarter to 846,000 BTC; 174,900 coins added year-to-date[BigGo Finance]

Strategy Inc (MSTR) reported Q2 2026 earnings after the close on July 30. With bitcoin sliding to roughly $58,700 at quarter-end, the company booked an $8.3 billion non-cash fair-value loss, driving a net loss of $8.6 billion, or $24.45 per share. Even so, the company grew its bitcoin holdings to 846,000 coins — up 11% quarter-over-quarter — and unveiled a $1 billion buyback plan aimed at pushing its digital credit product, STRC, back to par. As of the July 31 close (U.S. markets were shut over the weekend, with no live trading), MSTR last traded at $93.28, down $4.46, or 4.56%, from the prior close of $97.74. Non-Cash Markdown Drives the Paper Loss

Strategy's Q2 report tells two stories at once: an $8.6 billion headline loss on paper, and aggressive bitcoin accumulation alongside a stronger balance sheet. Per BigGo Finance, the quarter's operating loss was $8.3 billion and the net loss $8.6 billion, or $24.45 per share — all of it stemming from the non-cash fair-value adjustment on bitcoin at quarter-end[BigGo Finance]. CFO Andrew Kang stressed on the call: "These results were driven by the non-cash fair value adjustment on our bitcoin holdings at quarter-end."[BigGo Finance]

The accounting stems from FASB ASU 2023-08 (ASC 350-60), effective for all calendar-year public companies since January 1, 2025, which requires bitcoin holdings to be marked to market through the income statement each quarter-end. TechTimes notes that before the rule, bitcoin was treated as an indefinite-lived intangible asset — writable down but never up. Now, price swings hit net income in both directions[TechTimes].

TechTimes, citing Strategy's 8-K filed July 6, notes the company had pre-announced roughly $8.32 billion in Q2 digital asset losses — $8.31 billion of it unrealized — with bitcoin's carrying value at $49.67 billion as of June 30[TechTimes]. BigGo Finance adds that had the quarter ended a few weeks later, with bitcoin rebounding to around $65,000, the company would have booked roughly $5.2 billion in fair-value gains instead[BigGo Finance].

Bitcoin Engine Keeps Humming

Despite the volatility, Strategy added a net 83,901 bitcoin in Q2 at an average purchase price of roughly $75,500. As of July 26, the company held 843,775 BTC — up 25% year-to-date and the largest institutional hoard on the planet[Strategy]. BigGo Finance data shows year-to-date accumulation of 174,895 BTC through July, with just 3,620 coins sold — for tax-loss harvesting and dividend funding — a sell-to-buy ratio of 1-to-48[BigGo Finance].

President and CEO Phong Le said on the call: "Our bitcoin holdings grew 11% in the quarter... and we reduced our outstanding debt from $8.2 billion to $6.7 billion."[BigGo Finance] He also downplayed the sales as "immaterial" relative to daily bitcoin liquidity, noting they represented less than 0.1% of trading volume even in the heaviest selling week[BigGo Finance].

The company's core value metric — bitcoin per share — rose 5% quarter-over-quarter to 210,824 sats, standing at 203,683 sats as of July 26; since 2020, the figure has quadrupled from 46,000 sats[BigGo Finance]. Strategy's own release puts Q2 BTC Yield at 5.0%, up from 3.2% in Q1[Strategy].

STRC Under Pressure, Management Promises Par in 70 Trading Days

A central focus of the earnings call was the stability of STRC, the flagship digital credit product. Per BigGo Finance, STRC's notional size has doubled to $10.5 billion, but the price has come under pressure. Management conceded missteps in letting dollar reserves run too low and has rebuilt them to a record $3.75 billion — enough to cover more than two years of dividend and interest payments[BigGo Finance].

Strategy's press release shows the company has repurchased $28.9 million notional of STRC for $25 million — a 13% discount to par[Strategy]. Phong Le stated: "Our goal is for STRC to trade between $99 and $100 over time. If STRC falls below $100, we intend to repurchase STRC shares on a regular and disciplined basis, adjusting the size of repurchases based on market price and liquidity."[Strategy]

Founder and Executive Chairman Michael Saylor added on the call: "In this phase of bitcoin sentiment weakness and market skepticism, we continue to evolve our business model, establishing digital credit as a new asset class. Our plan is to restore STRC to health, with stable demand, high liquidity, and low-volatility trading near par."[Strategy] BigGo Finance reports management has committed to restoring STRC to par ($99–$100) within roughly 70 trading days, backed by the $1 billion buyback authorization and a total reserve pool of $58.5 billion[BigGo Finance].

Capital Model Shift: From "Never Sell" to Active Management

TechTimes notes this call marked Strategy's first earnings event since formally adopting bitcoin sales as a capital management tool in June 2026 — a decision that ended the four-year "never sell" doctrine that had underpinned MSTR's premium[TechTimes]. The report cites Strategy's June 29 digital credit capital framework announcement, which formally added bitcoin sales to the capital management toolkit[TechTimes].

CFO Andrew Kang introduced a new enhanced metric in the release: "Our BTC Hurdle ARR is 10.8%, representing our current effective cost of credit. If BTC ARR is above this rate, Net BTC Per Share will capture positive spread and appreciate faster than bitcoin itself on a go-forward basis."[Strategy]

Strategy's release shows the company raised $17.06 billion year-to-date via its ATM program, with STRC issuance adding $7.53 billion — up 254% year-over-year. Cumulative preferred dividend payments reached $1.06 billion, with 18 consecutive months of dividends paid[Strategy]. The company also established a $1 billion MSTR buyback program, though no repurchases had been made as of July 26[Strategy].

Intellectia.AI, citing SeekingAlpha, reports Strategy's Q2 EPS came in at -$24.45 on revenue of $122.4 million, missing estimates by $2.08 million. The company has launched a preferred stock buyback program aimed at boosting EPS by reducing shares outstanding[Intellectia.AI]. GuruFocus's coverage likewise zeroes in on the two headline numbers: bitcoin holdings surging 11% and debt slashed 18%[GuruFocus].
